Designing a Vacation Home You'll Never Want to Leave

by Jory Killian, your host at Villa Bella Clementina

Some vacation homes are beautiful. Others become part of the memories.

The first morning of a trip often sets the tone for everything that follows. Coffee tastes a little better. The air feels different. No one is in a hurry. Conversations begin slowly, plans come together naturally, and before long everyone has settled into a rhythm that feels wonderfully removed from everyday life.

That feeling was the inspiration behind Villa Bella Clementina.

When we purchased the property, we weren't trying to build the biggest home or fill it with the most expensive finishes. Our goal was much simpler: create a place where people genuinely wanted to spend time together. Every renovation, every furniture choice, and every layout decision came back to one question:

Will this design make someone's stay just a little bit better?

Design That Encourages Connection

The best moments on vacation are rarely the ones you plan.

They're the conversations that linger around the dinner table long after dessert. They're children disappearing into a game room while the adults open another bottle of wine. They're mornings that begin with coffee outside and evenings that end around the fire pit because nobody is quite ready to call it a night.

Those moments don't happen by accident.

The flow of a home matters just as much as its finishes. A kitchen that stays connected to the living spaces keeps the cook part of the conversation. Comfortable seating encourages people to linger. Multiple gathering areas let everyone find their own pace without ever feeling separated.

Rather than designing individual rooms, we tried to design the experience of moving through the home.

Every Room Should Earn Its Place

One lesson I've learned over the years is that extra square footage doesn't automatically create a better vacation.

Purpose does.

The rooftop deck offers a quiet place to begin the morning with a cup of coffee or end the day watching the changing light over Sonoma Valley. The game room has become the setting for family tournaments, rainy afternoons, and more laughter than I ever imagined. The fitness room lets guests keep familiar routines while still feeling completely away from home.

Each space exists because it adds something different to the experience.

Not because it looked good on a floor plan.

The Details Guests Remember

Beautiful countertops eventually fade into the background.

Comfort doesn't.

Radiant heated bathroom floors on a cool morning. A soaking tub at the end of a day exploring wine country. Plenty of seating so no one is searching for a chair. A kitchen that's stocked well enough to prepare a holiday dinner instead of simply reheating takeout.

Many of these details never appear in listing photos, yet they're often the things guests mention months later.

Those are the details worth investing in.

Hospitality by Design

Owning a vacation home has taught me that hospitality begins long before a guest arrives.

It begins with anticipating needs before they're noticed. It means asking where someone will naturally set down a glass of wine, where they'll gather before dinner, where they'll want to read for an hour, or how a family of eight can comfortably spend an entire day at the house without feeling crowded.

Those questions have guided hundreds of decisions over the years. Individually they're small. Together they've shaped the feeling I hoped Villa Bella Clementina would have from the very beginning.

A home that invites people to slow down, settle in, and quietly wish they had booked one more night.
